If you’re on the lookout for a great public golf course in Dallas, Stevens Park Golf Course is definitely worth considering. Located just southwest of downtown, this 18-hole course offers a perfect mix of history, charm, and challenge, making it a go-to destination for golfers of all skill levels.

A Historic Layout

Originally opened in 1927, Stevens Park underwent a redesign in 2010 by John Colligan, giving it a modern twist while preserving its historic charm. The course stretches to 6,285 yards (par 70), with tight fairways, tricky greens, and some unique elevation changes that keep things interesting. It's not the longest course in Dallas, but it’s a fun challenge, especially for those who enjoy strategy over power.

Good: Why You’ll Love It

1. Affordable Rates

Stevens Park offers great value for golfers, especially considering its proximity to downtown Dallas. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, the rates here are more than reasonable for a course of this quality.

2. Walkability

If you love walking your rounds, Stevens Park is one of the most walkable courses in the city. The compact layout, combined with the rolling hills, makes it an enjoyable walk without feeling too strenuous.

3. City Views

As you make your way through the back nine, you’ll be treated to some amazing views of downtown Dallas. It’s not often you get to play a round with such a unique city skyline backdrop.

4. Challenging, but Fair

The small greens and tight fairways offer a nice challenge for golfers without being overly difficult. The course provides enough of a test to keep you engaged, but it's not so punishing that beginners won’t enjoy their round.

Bad: What to Keep in Mind

1. Tricky Bunkers

Stevens Park has some tricky bunkers that might frustrate golfers who aren’t comfortable with sand shots. Many of the bunkers have steep faces, which can make it difficult to escape if you find yourself in them.

2. Limited Practice Areas

The practice facilities are a bit basic. There’s a driving range, but it’s not huge, and the short game area is fairly limited. If you like to warm up before your round, you might find the facilities a bit lacking.

3. Course Condition Can Be Inconsistent

Though the course is generally well-maintained, there are occasional mentions of areas not always being in perfect shape. From time to time, the fairways or greens may not be as pristine as you’d expect, though this is usually the exception rather than the rule.
